On Monday, December 30, 2019, Darryl Lee Hayden, beloved father, brother, and Papa passed away at home after a long battle with heart disease. Darryl was born in Burlington, VT on December 19,1950 to Lyle Hayden and Leona Ploof and was raised in Hinesburg, VT. Following his 1969 graduation from Hinesburg High School, Darryl joined the United States Army, serving in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam as a medevac helicopter crewman, and was awarded a purple heart medal of honor and two bronze stars. Darryl worked for Westinghouse Electric in the 1970’s. By the end of the decade, with an abundance of determination and notorious entrepreneurial spirit, he started his own excavating business He proudly owned and operated Darryl Hayden Excavating for over 35 years. Upon retirement, Darryl enjoyed wintering at his home in Gaines City, FL.
Darryl will be remembered for his love of a good joke, good food, and hosting big family gatherings. His favorite times were visiting with family and friends, cooking them breakfast and laughing over a good cup of coffee. He enjoyed playing cards, car rides, and cherished his dogs. The generosity, loyalty, humor and laughter he brought to so many, will never be forgotten.
Darryl was predeceased by his parents, brother Lyle Jr, and sister Pauline. He is survived by his son Bradley and wife Melissa of Starksboro, VT, and son, Mark of Amarillo, TX. Sister, Caroline Sherman and brother in-law Johnny of Hinesburg, VT. Grandchildren; Quatie, Amanda, Madelyn and Dylan. Close family friends Lauren and Jessica Riley, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family who were very dear to him.
Visiting hours will be from 3-6 pm Sunday, January 5th at St. Jude Parish hall, 10759 VT-116 Hinesburg. A funeral service will also be held at St. Jude on Monday, Jan 6th at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, 200 Hinesburg Road South Burlington.
